Hi everyone,
I could not believe my eyes when I opened the mail attachment containing the BUC results yesterday. In bold were the words "GOLD". I thought it was some kind of mistake; so Mr Tay and myself actually sat down to total up our scores. In the end, we found that there was nothing wrong with the results. We are now officially a GOLD unit.
Honestly, I was initially embarassed because I felt that we did not deserve it. Every time I go for a HQ activity, I see the Anglican, Holy Innocents, Victoria cadets carrying themselves very well; uniform smart and tidy, no excess movement in the file. They are the perfect example of how cadets from a GOLD unit ought to behave. When I compare them with BSS NCC cadets, we are really light years away from that standard. So how can we ever be a GOLD unit?
But then I thought a bit more, and realised that I have been belittling the efforts that everyone in the unit have been putting in. Though our discipline may not be up to that standard yet.......everyone.....YES, EVERYONE, from teacher officers to cadet officers to the Part Ds and finally cadets have been putting in effort throughout the year to make GOLD a reality for us.
Off hand, let me jog you through some of the important milestones of 2009.
- our first PD drill squad and performance during Orientation
- our first freestyle drill squad which put up an excellent performance at the competition, though we returned empty handed
- the hike during the unit camp which took us from school to top of Bt. Timah hill
- our cadets who form the bulk of the new YSF
- our 2 Part C cadets who participated at NDP
-our Part C shooters who emerged one of the top shooting teams at the annual comp
- our second annual trg camp for part Bs in Nov
Looking at all the things stated above, I have to say that YES! WE DESERVE IT!
I really hope that the GOLD will inspire us to work harder and not rest on our laurels. From now on, we better start behaving and carrying ourselves like a GOLD unit.
I just want to thank every single one of you for this award is not possible without your effort.
